Putuo is named after the territory of Putuo Mountain, a Buddhist holy site in the northeast of Zhejiang Province and southeast of the Zhoushan Archipelago. It has a total area of 6,730 square kilometers, of which the sea area is 6,271 square kilometers and the land area is 459 square kilometers. It is an oceanic area and a land area.
